Probable cause

The student pilot’s improper landing flare, which resulted in a hard landing, and the flight instructor’s delayed remedial action.

NTSB narrative

The purpose of the flight was practice touch-and-go landings at a local airport. The flight instructor reported that during the first landing attempt, the airplane was high on approach, and the student initiated a go-around at the instructor’s direction. During the second landing attempt, the airplane again was high on final approach, and the student flared a “little high” and landed hard on the runway. The instructor applied full engine power and right rudder to initiate a go-around but was unable to maintain directional control and the airplane exited the left side of the runway and came to rest in a grassy area adjacent to the runway. During the runway excursion, the airplane’s left main and nose gear separated,and the left wing impacted the ground, resulting in substantial damage to the left wing. The flight instructor reported that there were no preaccident mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.
