Probable cause

The pilot’s failure to maintain control of the airplane during an aborted landing attempt which resulted in an aerodynamic stall.

NTSB narrative

The pilot and the pilot-rated passenger were on a personal cross-country flight and upon reaching their destination, the pilot wanted to perform some practice landings. During the first landing attempt, she was too high on approach and performed a go-around. During the second attempt, the pilot stated that while attempting to land, after touchdown, the airplane turned to the right. She used left brake and rudder to attempt to regain directional control and applied engine power to abort the landing. Several eyewitnesses reported that the airplane appeared to bounce twice after landing, after which they heard the engine power up before the left wing dropped, impacted the turf runway, and “tumbled” before the airplane came to rest. The impact resulted in substantial damage to the left wing and fuselage. Postaccident examination of the airplane’s flight controls revealed no evidence of any preimpact failures or anomalies that would have precluded normal operation. Given this information, it is likely that during the aborted landing attempt, the airplane exceeded the critical angle of attack resulting in an aerodynamic stall.
