Probable cause

The pilot’s failure to maintain directional control during the landing roll.

NTSB narrative

The pilot of the tailwheel equipped airplane reported that after they performed a 3-point landing, the airplane veered to the right. The pilot attempted to correct with left rudder input; however, the airplane continued to the right and exited the runway surface. The left main landing gear dug into the grass covered surface and the airplane pivoted 180° to the right, which resulted in substantial damage to the left aileron and left elevator. Post accident examination revealed that there were no preaccident mechanical malfunction or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation. At the time of the accident, the pilot was landing on runway 27, with wind variable at 5 knots.
